Brave New World

Crushed recycled glass and associated contaminants, recycled fencing wire, construction adhesive.

Despite being infinitely recyclable and environmentally safe, and despite nation-wide recycling programs with huge public support, there is actually now no market for recycled glass in Australia since China stopped importing our waste in 2018.

This piece is made from crushed recycled glass sourced from the City of Lismore resource recovery centre.  Council has begun using the crushings in road base as a way of avoiding sending it to land fill.

Using recycled materials held together by construction adhesive, artist Papillon seeks to highlight the insanity of an economic system where plastic packaging shipped vast distances by fossil fuels makes more ‘economic sense’ than using local recycled glass.
